Old St. Louis Natural Area to Thompson River Access | Loveland, CO

Looking for a quick nature fix with big rewards? This 0.6-mile adventure transitions from sun-drenched wetlands filled with bird calls to a "secret" shaded river spur. With staggered break areas featuring benches or boulders for climbing, mounted binoculars for bird watching, and a rocky river access spur for splashing, it’s the ultimate "sensory playground" for Loveland families.

A Glimpse of the Trail: February (Late Winter)

Detailed Trail Description:

Your journey begins on a wide, sun-drenched path that winds down into the wetlands. Lined with towering cattails, you may sneak a peak at a wandering deer or hear the iconic, trilling "conk-la-ree!" of Red-winged Blackbirds. Along the way, kids can climb onto the large granite boulders or pause at the rest area to peer through the mounted binoculars at the various ducks and other waterfowl visiting the wetlands.

But the real magic happens just past the bridge—follow the path as it spears off toward the Big Thompson River, leading you to a shaded "secret" spur. This is the perfect spot to spend an hour; the bank is lined with river-smoothed stones, offering plenty of space for kids to skip rocks or splash in the shallows while staying cool under the trees.

Exploring Along the River in February

Accessibility Notes:

Kid-Friendly Highlights

  • River Play: The access point offers plenty of natural "loose parts"—sticks, smooth river rocks, and water—to keep small hands busy.

  • Wildlife Spotting: The ducks in the wetlands and the "busy" red ant hills provide endless entertainment for curious toddlers.

  • Nature’s Transitions: Kids love the "secret entrance" feel of moving from the bright, open sun into the cool, dark woods by the river.

  • Safe Exploration: No steep drop-offs or scary heights here.

  • Safety Note: There are many large, busy red ant hills just off-trail and several smaller ones on the path itself. Keep curious toddlers away to avoid painful bites. If they do wander into a hill, immediately move them to a clear spot, remove any shoes or apparel the ants have climbed into, and pour water over the area to quickly flush the ants away.

Dog-Friendly Highlights

  • Cool Down: The river at the end of the out-and-back is the perfect reward for your pup to grab a drink and cool their paws after the sunny walk through the wetlands.

  • Leash Life: Must be kept on a leash along the trail.

Trail Traffic:

  • Moderate: You’ll see plenty of local runners, walkers, bicyclists, and birders on the main trail during peak hours, but the river trail is much less busy. It’s a great spot for a quiet morning walk.

Important Considerations:

  • Essential Gear: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are non-negotiable for the first half of this trail! Don't forget bug spray, as the wetlands and river can be active.

  • Spring Thaw: Expect a pungent, "marshy" scent on warm winter/spring days as wetlands thaw.

  • Mud/Flooding: Wetland and river paths often get muddy or flood during peak spring runoff.

  • Ant Hill Safety: Watch where you (and your pets) stand! The Red Ant hills here are impressive but best viewed from a distance to avoid bites.

  • Trail Manners: Stay on the designated path through the wetlands to protect the nesting areas of the ducks and blackbirds.

  • Best Timing: Early morning is best to avoid the midday heat on the exposed portion of the trail or late day buggy weather.
