Lions Open Space to Butterfly Woods | LaPorte, CO

Looking for easy river access without a long drive? The stroll from Lions Open Space to Butterfly Woods in LaPorte is a local favorite for its wide, paved paths and one of the most charming rustic bridges in the area. It’s a "sensory win" for kids who love to skip rocks and splash in the Poudre.

But take note: This is a major artery for the Poudre Trail, meaning you’ll share the path with plenty of fast-moving cyclists and e-scooters. It’s the perfect spot for a stroller walk or a splashing session, provided you keep the "littles" close and stay alert for those two-wheeled travelers!

A Glimpse of the Trail: February

A Glimpse of the Trail: July

Detailed Trail Description:

Starting from the Lions Open Space Trailhead, the wide, paved path follows the Cache La Poudre River. While the trail is easy, it is a high-traffic area for wheels, so keep your "explorer eyes" peeled!

River Access: There are several ways to get your feet wet. While two narrow footpaths through tall grass lead to the bank, the safest access for toddlers and young children is at the tunnel under the road. The entry there is gently sloped and easy to navigate—perfect for skipping stones or splashing in the shallows.

⚠️ Caution: As you approach the tunnel, stay alert for a small incline and two blind corners where cyclists often appear quickly.

The Bridges: Continuing on, you’ll reach the highlight of the route: a charming rustic wooden and metal bridge. This is a favorite spot for photos and watching the river flow beneath you, but be mindful of two more blind spots—one midway and one at the far end of the bridge.

Butterfly Woods & The Snack Spot: The bridge leads you into the quiet expanse of Butterfly Woods Natural Area, which quickly opens up and is very exposed to the sun. My favorite turnaround point is the stone seat, tucked off to the right (west). This shaded "rest stop" is the perfect place to pause for a snack and a water break before heading back to the trailhead.

Accessibility Notes:

  • Kid-Friendly Notes: The flat, wide paved path is excellent for new walkers gaining confidence and is 100% stroller-friendly. The gentle river access and the rustic bridge offer fun landmarks and great spots for interactive play.

  • Dog-Friendly Notes: Dogs are welcome on-leash. There are multiple river access points along the path for a quick drink or a splash.

Trail Traffic:

  • Seasonal: Generally light during winter; very heavy during peak season.

  • The "Wheels" Factor: This trail is heavily used by runners and cyclists. It is a main section of the 12.3-mile Poudre Trail connecting the Watson Fish Hatchery (Bellvue) to the CSU Environmental Learning Center (Fort Collins).

Important Considerations:

  • The "Noisy" Bridge: The rustic wooden bridge is charming, but the boards "clatter" loudly when bikes pass over. It can be startling for toddlers; hold their hand and give them a heads-up!

  • High-Speed Traffic: Because this is a major bike artery, you will encounter fast-moving cyclists, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

  • Stay Visible: Dress your "littles" in vibrant colors so riders can see them from a distance. Use voice commands like "hug the right" to keep them clear of the passing lane.

  • Blind Turns: There are four key blind turns (two near the road bridge, two on the wooden bridge). Keep kids close here, as many riders do not use bells.

Planning Your Trip:
